I AM 60LDIE THE ARTIST

SAY MY Name

Hello everyone, my name is Marcus Addison, and I go by the name 6oldie the artist. I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share a little bit about my journey as a self-taught artist. I was born in Killeen, Texas, and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. As a child, I was always fascinated by art, but I never received any formal training. Instead, I spent countless hours experimenting and teaching myself different techniques. This self-taught approach has allowed me to develop a unique style and perspective that sets me apart from other artists. Now, let me explain why I chose the name 6oldie. It's actually a play on words. The "6" in my name represents the value of gold on the periodic table, and "oldie" is a nod to the timeless quality of my artwork. So, when you say my name, it's pronounced "goal-dee". You might also notice that I've taken a creative approach with the letter "g" in 6oldie. This is intentional, as I want to spark curiosity and interest in who I am as an artist. I believe that art should not only be visually striking, but also thought-provoking and engaging. For me, art was more than just a hobby or a passion - it was a way of life. Art was the one thing I was good at, and it allowed me to escape from my environment and express myself in a way that words could not. Growing up, I faced many challenges and obstacles. I was surrounded by negative influences and limited opportunities, and it was easy to feel trapped and hopeless. But when I picked up a paintbrush or a pencil, everything changed. I was able to paint a different picture, to create a world that was beyond my circumstances. Art became my escape.

HUMBLE BEginnings

As a child, one of my fondest memories was visiting my grandmother's house in Lower Peachtree, Alabama. It was a small town surrounded by miles and miles of green trees, and there wasn't much to do there. However, what made those visits so special to me was that my grandmother would always ask me to draw something. I remember feeling special as a kid because my grandmother saw something in me that made her want to see my artwork. She would give me a pen and paper and watch as I drew whatever my imagination could conjure up.
It didn't matter how good or bad my drawings were, my grandmother always praised my work and made me feel like a talented artist. Another memory I have from my childhood is of my brother and me drawing Dragon Ball Z pictures. We would spend hours sketching our favorite characters from the anime series, and eventually, we turned our hobby into one of our earliest entrepreneurial ventures. We used up all the ink in our mom's printer to print out our Dragon Ball Z drawings and take them to school to sell to other kids who had no reference pictures to draw from or who needed some new inspiration. We quickly became popular among our peers, and we used the extra funds we made to buy snacks and whatever our hearts desired.
Looking back, those visits to my grandmother's house in Lowe Peachtree, Alabama, were more than just small town visits. They were a time of creativity, imagination, and entrepreneurship. And I'll always cherish those memories of my grandmother and my brother as we pursued our passions and discovered the joys of creating and selling our artwork. I first picked up a paintbrush when I took an art class in junior high school. This was when my “lightbulb” turned on. I started to use my paintbrush to express my emotions. It was difficult for me to voice my opinions because I could not find the correct words to say.  Art was my voice. It gave me freedom when it did not exist. Art was my peace when there was no peace!

Inspiration

The “lightbulb” moment was so impactful, I designed and trademarked my light bulb design. It is now the inspiration for my series, “Light Work.” I use various mediums and techniques to create pieces that evoke the lightbulb's shape, texture, and energy. Whether working in painting, sculpture, or mixed media, I'm constantly exploring new ways to express the beauty and complexity of this iconic object. The lightbulb is also a symbol of innovation and progress. It represents the power of human ingenuity and the ability to create something out of nothing. By incorporating the lightbulb into my art, I hope to inspire others to think creatively and embrace the power of their own ideas. In short, I use the lightbulb as a symbol of inspiration, creativity, innovation, and progress. Through my art, I seek to celebrate the power of human ingenuity and inspire others to embrace their own creative potential. My art expresses no limitations or boundaries. It allows me to take my vision wherever I desire with no regard to boxes and opinions.
